Video or Not

As I was completely fouling up the video portion of a new portrait last night, my lady told me that it's very likely nobody watches the videos.  It wasn't said to make me feel bad about having low viewership, but simply a cost outlook.  I spend a lot of time and effort on the videos, more than I do for the drawings.  I've always felt it differentiated me from other folks, but it may just be added headache.

So what do you think?  Do you think the accompanying videos are a good feature?  Would you miss them if I stopped doing them?  Do you think the product would be worth your money without them?

Ben, a couple of thoughts / rhetorical questions:

- How much time does it take to record / put together the video / upload to Youtube / etc vs the benefits you receive?

- As the customer who didn't get a video when your old camera died, I didn't really miss it (please understand that I mean no offense). For me, it was really about the artwork that I was getting for my wife. I'm sure others have different opinions and enjoy the video process greatly.

Maybe you can strike a balance between new videos for fresh content for Youtube and not doing every single one since I know it has to be a lot of work.

With or without your video, your work is a bargain. I was very surprised to see videos given the charge for a portrait.

Thanks for your reply.

I did the videos initially to compete with my contemporaries. They were offering similar products at slightly higher prices. I thought if I could do the same but for less I'd be getting all kinds of orders. Sadly that didn't pan out.

So far the benefits haven't been much, if anything. I don't get many viewers on either the drawing's Flickr pages or the YouTube channel. The videos take about 20 minutes total when you count having to convert files, import to the editor, upload, etc. It easily doubles the time spent. I could easily charge extra for videos and feel okay about it. Maybe $10 extra.

Either way, when you only get about one request a month it's not like it's an inconvenience to do it.

Thanks again for your input, I appreciate it.
